Fire watch towers of old Istanbul
This year I came back to Turkey after 25 years abroad. My wife and I bought a flat in Alanya through https://yektahomes.com/ and moved in during the summer. In September we went to Istanbul for a week, and there I learned that the Galata tower was a fire watch post for more than a century.
A watchman sat up there day and night. When he saw smoke, the tower showed a signal, baskets by day and lanterns by night, and the number told the whole city which district was burning. The Beyazit tower on the other side did the same.
The old signal lanterns are rare now. Does anyone in the network know a museum, here or in Europe, that keeps fire watch equipment like this?
